About Our Studio
In Theory Art Studios is an experiential design and creative fabrication studio based in Huntsville, Utah, specializing in monumental sculptural and architectural forms, interactive installations, and optically dynamic light environments. Operating out of a 100% solar-powered fabrication site, the studio executes all project phases in-house—from parametric 3D modeling and architectural visualization to prototype development, fabrication, and rapid field deployment.
The studio is directed by lead designer and artist Dr. Emily Nicolosi. Formally trained in Studio Art at the University of Vermont with a doctorate in Geography from the University of Utah, she pursues her interest in the intersection of humanity, place, and environment through her work with In Theory. Dr. Nicolosi is supported by Head of Fabrication Ian Nicolosi and a dedicated team of specialists, bringing together decades of combined experience in materials science engineering, multidiscipliary fabrication methods, advanced interactive electronics, and LED programming.
In Theory Art Studios exhibits nationally and internationally at premier events, cultural gatherings, museums, and in public spaces. The studio is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including The Land Art Generator Initiative, the Salt Lake City Arts Council, and Burning Man's Honoraria Grant Program.
Beyond its public-facing work, the studio is deeply committed to arts education and American cultural exchange. The studio hosts structured training programs, mentoring emerging American and global professionals in sustainable fabrication, digital tooling, and spatial design.
Artist's Statement, Lead Designer and Founder Emily Nicolosi
My practice explores horizons of possibility, utilizing an lens of radical hope to examine human evolution toward a more socially and ecologically just future. I reject the notion that contemporary art should require a specialized academic background to be understood; instead, I employ universal iconographic forms to ensure my work remains accessible and resonant with the public. I seek to immerse the viewer in landscapes of beauty by recasting these symbolic forms through parametric geometries and dichroic, iridescent materials that activate through the interplay of natural and digital light.
For me, art must serve as an extraordinary catalyst for connection—a site of wonder that invites collective reflection on our intricate relationship with the natural world and with each other. This practice is dual-rooted in scientific innovation and social inquiry. While I continuously iterate on materials science and LED technologies to create moments of aesthetic joy, I utilize my background—specifically a doctorate in Human Geography focused on climate change mitigation—to ground my work in the most pressing socio-environmental challenges of our time.
Environmental stewardship is fundamental to my methodology. My entire process prioritizes sustainability, the integration of upcycled architectural polycarbonates and the engineering of off-grid solar-battery power systems, to the daily operation of our 100% solar-powered fabrication studio. nformed by the Burning Man tradition of large-scale, immersive installations, I strive to create works that transport audiences beyond the mundane, fostering a transformative space of collective inspiration and hope.
