Fire in the sky posits that the electrical energy is a glorious phenomenon worthy of so much praise, yet taken for granted in modern society. The piece is intended to demonstrate that electrical energy is fundamental to our modern lives, give folks a sense of how much energy they use for day-to-day tasks, and what that cost is for greenhouse gas emissions / climate change. This is conveyed through the striking presence of a massive lightning bolt striking the earth. To activate a lighting strike, participants can ride a bike or use a hand crank machine to charge the lightning bolt. When the bolt is charged, a fantasic lightning bolt LED patterns strikes the ground, along with sound effects. In it’s resting state, the lightning bolt plays a slower pattern. The sculpture will be surrounded by a perimeter made of (not real) electrical conduits). In each electrical conduit drum, a different interactive artwork will show participants how much power they use in their lives and what the climate change impact of this is. One of the conduits will actually be a tesla coil, and we will do daily demonstrations.
